How to keep your dog safe in the UAE summer heat

From June to September, daytime temperatures in the UAE regularly pass 45°C and pavements get far hotter than the air. Dogs cool down mainly by panting, which works poorly in heat and humidity, so a short walk at the wrong time can be dangerous. These are the habits that keep dogs safe through the summer.

Walk early, walk late

Plan walks before sunrise or well after sunset, and keep midday outings to quick toilet breaks. Before you step out, press the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds: if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws. Grass, shaded paths and indoor dog-friendly spaces are better choices in July and August.

Never leave a dog in a car

A parked car in the UAE can reach deadly temperatures within minutes, even with the windows open or the engine off for "just a moment". If you cannot take your dog inside with you, leave them at home.

Water, shade and air conditioning

  • Keep fresh water available everywhere your dog spends time, and carry a bottle and bowl on walks.
  • Outdoor dogs need proper shade and ventilation; in peak summer most dogs are safest indoors with air conditioning.
  • Frozen treats, cooling mats and a shallow paddling pool help, but they do not replace shade and water.

Breeds that struggle most

Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds have narrow airways and overheat quickly. Take extra care with French Bulldogs, Bulldogs and Pugs. Thick double-coated breeds such as the Siberian Husky and Pomeranian also suffer in the heat. Do not shave a double coat: it protects the skin from sun and helps insulate. Regular brushing to remove the loose undercoat works better. Ask your vet or groomer which coat care suits your dog. Puppies, older dogs and overweight dogs are at higher risk too.

Signs of heatstroke

Heavy panting that does not settle, drooling, a bright red or pale tongue, weakness, stumbling, vomiting or collapse are emergencies. Move the dog into shade or air conditioning, wet the body with cool (not ice-cold) water, offer small amounts of water and go to a vet straight away, even if your dog seems to recover.

Keep them busy indoors

When walks are short, use puzzle feeders, sniffing games and short training sessions to tire your dog out. A bored dog in a small flat is more likely to chew and bark, so mental exercise matters as much as physical exercise in summer.
