Arowana

Arowanas are large, long-lived predatory fish, prized in the Gulf for their metallic scales and calm, gliding swim. The best-known types are the Asian arowana (super red, golden and green), the silver arowana and the jardini. An adult can pass 60 to 90 cm, so plan for a big tank of at least 180 cm long with a tight, heavy lid, because arowanas jump. Keep the water warm and very clean with strong filtration and regular water changes, and feed a varied diet of quality pellets, insects and prawns.

The Asian arowana is a protected species (CITES Appendix I). Only captive-bred fish from registered farms may be traded, and each one should come with a CITES certificate and a microchip whose number matches the paperwork. Ask the seller for both before you pay, and keep them safe. Silver arowanas do not need a CITES permit.
