Cichlids

Cichlids are a large, varied family of aquarium fish known for their colours and personality. Popular cichlids include African Malawi and Tanganyika cichlids, oscars, angelfish, flowerhorns, convicts and severums. Many are territorial and some grow large, so choose tank size and tank mates with care and research each type before you buy.

African cichlids prefer hard, alkaline water and rockwork with plenty of caves, while angelfish and most South American cichlids like softer water and planted tanks. Oscars and flowerhorns can reach 30 cm and need big tanks with strong filtration. Change part of the water every week, remove chlorine from tap water, and avoid mixing aggressive and peaceful species.
