Goldfish

Goldfish are one of the easiest and most popular pet fish, from the common and comet goldfish to fancy types such as the oranda, ranchu, ryukin, telescope eye and pearlscale. They are friendly, recognise their owners and can live 10 to 15 years with good care. Despite the old image, a bowl is not a suitable home: goldfish produce a lot of waste and need a filtered tank. As a guide, plan for about 75 litres for the first fancy goldfish and more for each extra fish.

Goldfish prefer cooler water than tropical fish, so in the UAE keep the tank away from windows and out of direct sun. Change part of the water every week, remove chlorine from tap water, and feed small amounts once or twice a day. Fancy goldfish are slower swimmers, so keep them with other fancy goldfish rather than with fast comets.
