Chameleons

Chameleons are fascinating lizards known for changing colour, turning their eyes separately and catching insects with their long tongues. The veiled chameleon and the panther chameleon are the types kept most often as pets. They are best for keepers with some reptile experience, because they stress easily and need a carefully set-up home.

A chameleon needs a tall, well-ventilated mesh enclosure with live or artificial plants to climb, a basking light, UVB lighting and daily misting or a dripper, because most will only drink moving water drops. They should be housed alone and handled as little as possible. Feed a variety of gut-loaded live insects dusted with calcium.

Chameleons are listed on CITES Appendix II, so legal trade needs the right paperwork. In the UAE, ask the seller for the CITES or import documents, and never buy wild-caught or protected animals.
